Tools that allow customers to add products to their store?

So, I recently got a gig designing an e-commerce site for a local small business owner. Here's the thing, he's got a budget, and I don't think he planned on paying someone to upkeep his site, just to create it. That's fine with me as well, I don't really have the time to be attached to one site (even if I am being paid for it). Anyone know of any nice, user-friendly tools that I can integrate into the site design so that he might be able to add his own products?

Usually when you build an ecommerce site, would you not have that part covered in the first place?

Uh. . . huh? Sorry, I may just be brain dead right now, but that phrasing is a bit odd, and I'm having trouble understanding what you're trying to get across.

Well if you building an e-com site you can reason that the owner will add and take away products on his web site so that functionality should already be included. updating products etc should be simply enough for him to do without hiring someone else to do it if he has the time to do so. You can really just use google check out or godaddy.com's services for that and then simply design custom css or whatever for the web sites layout.

I read this as "I have no idea how to develop a simple e-commerce site so I need a free open source solution so I dont look like an idiot after taking the clients money "

Can you not just create it yourself? Should be quite staightforward if you've managed to create an ecommerce site in the first place?

Well, that's ok, I forgive your inadequacies in the field of literacy

Ok, I suppose I should make my situation more clear. I'm doing a website for a friend of a friend as a favor. I'm not a developer though, I'm a designer. My main job is purely the LOOK of the site, not the coding. However, these people don't have a large enough budget to hire a real developer for the coding aspect (and they certainly aren't giving me enough money to outsource), and since I'm mainly doing this as a favor (hardly any compensation whatsoever) I'm trying to find something that I can "install" as a way to save the client money.

Oh, and again referring to the quote, if it were ME I could make a complete e-commerce site. The problem is that I need a system my client (someone with absolutely no coding knowledge) can run once the site is set up so that they don't have to pay an additional cost for someone to upkeep the site.

Now that I know the full story, I stick with my first well phrased response which was backed up by Miguel. I also whole heartedly agree with Agricola.

All seems a bit harsh.

You could try something like OpenCart or PrestaShop
