Photoshop Layers flat?

I don't really know what to call my problem, that's mostly why I came here and asked this. It's hard to find an answer to a question you don't know exaclty the question to.

This is what I have, I have 2 layers both of wich I would like on one. In one of the layers I have a layer effect (bevel and emboss). I want to make this layer "flat" or whatever so I can merge these two layers. I know it's hard to visualize and it's probibly a simple answer.

I tried to "flatten image" but that gave me a white background, I wanted it transparent. When I just merge the two layers it applys the layer effect to the whole thing (not wanted).

Confused?
Know exactly what to do?
Please help!
Thanks
Chris

select the layer without the bevel

link the layer with the bevel

merge linked layers (Ctrl + E / Apple + E)
