What Shopping cart?

Ok. This is my first post here so be gentle with me as I'm completely new to web site creation and design (gotta start somewhere I guess).

I'm looking to create a new ecommerce web site. I order to do the "commerce" bit, I've been looking at open source carts, Zencart and OSCommerce. Basically cause I'm tight and I want to keep it a cheap as possible. I've only just started looking at them so I'm reading lots but these questions don't seem top be answered.

Has anyone had experience with these? Which one is better for the less experienced? Which one have you used? Which one do you think is best? Which one is the easiest and the most secure? Any problems or issues that you have had?

Thanks for the help and Info. Oh! and hi to everyone on dt

Just about to post same question. I have been looking into magento as another option too.
Anyone got any thoughts on the best option? Is open source the best route?

Well I wouldn't go with Zen Cart, it's not seen any updates since 2007....

Thanks for the replys guys. I'll give ZenCart a try first and see how it pans out. I'll let you know how it goes if anyone is interested.

What about a hosted one like Big Cartel to get you going. You can have up to 100 products.

I don't understand the logic for going with something that has ceased in development...

I've had good experiences with OSCommerce in the past but it has been 3 or 4 years since I last had a need to use it.

I would second magento as a good shopping cart. We have a page and video about it here: Magento Hosting, ecommerce solution, free installation - CWI Hosting

It is very flexible, and the closest I've tried to enterprise grade for a fully open source cart! Before this, another open source cart we have used a lot is OScommerce, this is better.

There was a lot of good hype about magento before it came out, but I have read horror stories of people trying to get it to work. Apparently it's still pretty buggy.

Zen cart has a good reputation. OsCommerce has a reputation for not outputting valid code.

I would highly recommend Magento. Just gone live with the first site, admittedly there is a steep learning curve but its well worth it. There is nothing else like it.

While it does seem reasonable to rely on free solutions for economy reasons, it's often preferable to find some affordable commercial product. The security, support and updates quality are often better. Personally, I'd recommend to try X-Cart as an example of such solution. It's not expensive, new versions come up quite often (they've just released a new major branch, 4.2) and their support level is what I've personally been pleased with.
