I've just finished a degree in media arts but have left feeling very unsure what to do from here. what kind of job I can expect to get? I mainly have experiance using Photoshop and Illustrator but also know a little InDesign, Dreamweaver, html and Flash. I do a bit of photography as well. also, I've got an interview tomorrow for a design and print assistant (full training given) but am unsure what the job consists of. |

Do what makes you feel fuzzy inside, which I presume is some sort of graphics design, be it print, or digital... thats the bigger question you need to ask yourself, what *kind* of designer do you want to be ? Print bores the crap out of me, but the learning curve for web/online design is steeeeeep, there are a lot more things to take into account for an online medium... you must be a good interface-designer, which, again, is something that takes years, and practice to be good at |

I would say Internet is still the future! from your previous post about Flash. I would say your probably thinking about interactive design marketing agencies, design agencies, multimedia companies, web design companies. think about what you get excited about when you see websites or designs and aspire to get a job doing that! |

The experience you will get at the job you're being interviewed for will also be invaluable. Good luck! My free fonts www.utfi.net

I thought you said that it was full training given? PS you can't know EVERYTHING on a particular software. It's on going. You learn as you go along. I'm sure you will be fine. As a graduate, I'm sure they don't expect you to be Miss Know-it-all. I hope not anyway, coz i'm a graduate and I'm not miss-knowitall. Haha |

the "industry" is notoriously difficult to get into at an early stage. Alot of companies prefer experience over education. The fact that you're fresh out of uni means to a potential employer you've not got any edge over the other hundred people who did the same course as you. As well as applying for jobs, try to find some local design companies. Email them asking if they can offer any advice on how you can get more experience, and on your CV. Its a good way to inadvertantley show them your work and CV, without them thinking you`re poaching for jobs... If you can, aim for smaller companies. They tend to have the MD / owner actually working there and will tend to have more time to have a cofee and a chat. |
