You can probably blag it if you are getting paid by an individual who doesn't have provide accounts to the Inland Revenue*, but you should really be registered as self-employed, and declare your earnings through self-assessment. If you do other PAYE work, you may well be able to claim back some of the tax you've paid through tax-breaks.

*This is not official advice, obviously.

Balls. There a big financial company so more that likely they get audited. Really should pull my finger out and so all the form filling. I'm a student so i do get a tax allowance of about £5000. But I'm already over that for earning this year so i'll be paying tax.

Time to do some research.

Phone up the inland revenue and declare your status as self employed, they will send you everything you need to know about

Quite right, if you don't do that and start working without their knowledge you can get fined.

In some cases, yes. However, most companies will need to put your invoice through as an expense to offset against income.

ie A job paid cash by a family friend you could get away with.
A job paid cash by a company - most likely not.

If you intend to carry on working freelance you should do the proper thing and set-up as trading self-employed along with accountant and business banking etc.
You should find people take you more seriously 'as a service provider' and even pick up better projects.

To do your accounts. Unless you enjoy book keeping, punching in numbers and have loads of free time on your hands.

I do employ an accountant, but I was questioning DNN’s need for one at this point in his career as it is an expense he could reduce by Self Assesment as recommended previously.
