Wanting to pursue this career.

I am wanting to pursue a career as a web designer and graphic designer. Though, I don't know where to start with the whole web design aspect. I have recently seen experiencedartmouth (.com) and was STUNNED at their site.

My question is:

How would I go about making a site like that?

What do you suspect they used? [specific programs / coding]

This would be SO much help and with good help I'll be able to publish my site. I am only 15 years old but I can handle whatever you throw at me, please help me in great detail. I'll be posting my finished website for all to see if this all goes as wanted and planned.

I'll be checking up on this post but if you are indefinitely interested in helping me out than please e-mail me at evan8george@hotmail.com

Thank you so much.

Oh, and I HAVE already contacted the creator of the site and he's offered to help me...but it seems as though his plans have changed and I will be receiving no help from him...thus why I am wanting help from you all.

I have already read that and every bit of the links given. Yet, nothing I read was really new, none of which explained how I could do something as the link showed.

I appreciate you directing me but I am looking for someone to spend a little time explaining or at least direct me to something that is a little more useful in the area I'm wanting.

Look again - all the info you need IS there - learn HTML and CSS and an image editor like Photoshop and move on from there.

Surely you can expect us to dissect that site and tell you exactly how it's all put together?

That particular website is badly built coding wise.
If it's just the interface elements (graphics) you want to learn how to do, have a look for photoshop tutorials round the net.

Photoshop Tutorials - PSDTUTS
Computer Arts - 2D & Photoshop

are good places to start

Yep. That site is obviously built in Dreamweaver by looking at the code. And it's piss-poor from a web design perspective.

I think piss-poor is somewhat overstating things.

well lets start with the basics, do you have any natural ability for design in general? it really helps to have a passion for what you're doing. web design is a great field if you've got a good balance of left brain/right brain perspective.

if you like the dartmouth site you'll probably love some other sites like thefwa.com (flash gallery; some really nice work here), smashingmagazine.com (great resources, information and links), alistapart.com ( a#1 info and insight here...), etc.

once you're inspired by the designs, start to understand the medium. the web is unique, it involves many disciplines and levels of integration; usability, semantic structuring, web standards best practices, designing for the need, coding, image creation and manipulation, having a sense of aesthetics, etc.

you're 15, the world is in front of you. do something you love and you'll always have a reason to smile. it's not just enought to do something, understand what you're doing and do it right.

Fine!

The design is good. The code is bad. I'm in a facetious mood today...just like every other day.

I really appreciate you writing that. It helped quite a bit more with understanding what I am getting myself into and what not. The thing is, I am attempting to build a site like EvokeOne, but the only real difference would be that many of the graphics will be meant to be applied with the merchandise I will sell off the site. So its an EvokeOne with a store. If anyone is interested in helping me...I do have good designing skills...but coding is just not my forte.

Thanks again.
