Oh, you might want to install a local server. I use SourceForge.net: MAMP and I find it great. (it always took ages to get a server running on windows)

I think I might follow this thread mr good. In the past I've tried and failed at using wordpress; all I want is a the ability to update my content, nothing else, i Don't want a blog just this.

CushyCMS - Take the work out of managing content does everything I need but I'd prefer to have it on-site database driven with PHP.

You picked up any books yet?

Just format your code so it's readable. You'll be fine.

People seem to be saying different things about wordpress, do you really need to have a decent knowledge of PHP just to build your own wordpress site?

I have just set up a bog standard wordpress blog art work — A graphic designers fumblings into PHP and CMS ... it is really very easy. it took longer writing the nonsense post!

but i want/hope to build sites from the ground up rather than just use/edit templates. that seems to need more serious graft.

Yeah well I'm doing the same thing, but I'm jumping in at the deep end and attempting to convert my static website into Wordpress.

I'm following this tutorial

I think it's only gonna be a matter of time until I hit a wall as I've no PHP knowledge.

welcome to the club.

i am .. hoping if i get a few of the basics learnt, following tutorials like that will be far easier - as personally, I just get lost too easily at the moment.

so the books are on order!

joy.

Cheers for the plug, Richard.

Wordpress is pretty easy to use, and pretty versatile once you get the hang of it.

a plugging pleasure.

i am somehow relishing the thought of building a site with no purpose what-so-ever - other than to learn.

i can do all kinds of nasties and there's no client to mow it all down!

didn't spot this post. will look into dreamweaver developer toolbox. cheers

don't think i will ever manage to become a PHP super master. just the basic nuts and bolts will do me, so hopfully i can look at code and on a basic level understand what's happening (as i can with currently css/html)
