Creative block on designing my new portfolio site

When it comes to designing things for myself I am completely useless! I tend to get the layout nailed but then go blank when it comes to jazzing it all up, i currently have (see attachment)

It started off as white with black/grey shades and a dab of red here and there, but then the whitespace ended up killing me, so now its redspace. Now I'm no website designer, i tend to look at sites from an informed customers point of view. Everything I have tried to make the design seem to "pop" a bit goes straight in the bin, so I ask the page designers of the communit, what can I do?! (and don't say hire you )
