Working on someone elses stylesheet

I'm trying to assist a friend with their website but it appears that the website was created with a script. From what I see the person that created the website used the "smarty template" system. The stylesheet that's associated with the website has poor documentation, I can only edit the look of the site by changing random items in the stylesheet and hoping that I'm changing what I intended to change. I there a solution for finding out what each item in the stylesheet is associated with? Please let me know if you need additional information. Thank you.

There's an extension for firefox called firebug which is quite good for this.

As Adam said, Firebug is what you want. Its the single best tool you can get for something like this.

For anything really. The Web Developer toolbar is handy, too, but it's no Firebug. I'm constantly finding new and useful Firebug features. I probably use it as much as a text editor.
