Could be a 3D render (doubt it). Probably in Illustrator - drawing paths with the pen tool and lots of patience.

I am 95% sure that it was done in illustrator, it would be a pain in the ass to model that design, the model is super smooth and the colors fade smoothly.

We had a similar thread to this not so long ago, can't find it now though?

You can achieve a simple "abstract waves" thing in Illustrator with blends.

That one could possibly be re-created with blends and then colour burn and retouching?
