Source Code Question
I am developing a website and the designer I was going to use said they will not give me the source code for my site after I have paid for it and they have created it. Is this a bad deal, and should I be going elsewhere for my website? Thanks for your help |

Have you already made/signed a deal with them? And if so, was this part of the original deal (go back and check your contract if you have one). If so, then you are out of luck. If it wasn't part of the original deal, then you may still be out of luck, but will have to discuss it with the designer and come to a resolution. If you are still in negotiations, then decide how important it is to you to receive the final code. If its very important, then tell the designer it's a deal breaker - receive the code or go somewhere else. If its not that important, then tell the designer you really want the code, but if they stick to their guns, then accept that you wont be getting it. disclaimer: I'm speaking as a negotiator, not as a designer (I'm not a designer) |

HTML and CSS and they can't supply the site without it. JAVA and you will be getting compiled code and should expect to pay a lot more for the source. PHP and JavaScript swing both ways though it's unusual to not receive the source for both. So what's the language and are you after the source for your own usage within the application you have contracted for or some other project? |

If by source code you are talking about the physical files that were used to create the site (AI,Flash,Photoshop) this is a normal practice. The idea is that if they just give you the source files they could lose business by going to another designer and getting a cheaper job done. Often you can buy these for an extra fee. Again I'm not sure which types of source files you are referring to or what terms you have/have not entered in. Skinny |
