Overprints need to be flattened - how?

Hi All,

Hope someone can help me.
I have created an InDesign file which has a photo placed in it. (I removed the background from the photo in photoshop and saved the image as a .tiff file.)
When I create a .pdf from my InDesign file all appears ok. But when I sent the .pdf to the printers they told me that the overprints needed to be flattened. They told me to open my file (.pdf) in Photoshop and I would be able to see what they were talking about.
So I naturally took a look at the .pdf in Photoshop and what do you know....the photo in my layout had a white background....what the???

Can someone please explain to me how this happens and how I can stop it from happening.....I've looked in InDesign and tried to flatten things but nothing I do seems to work.

I'm awaiting anyones reply urgently.

Cheers
