adobe contribute

good morning people

i have basic cowboy knowledge off css/html - know sod all about php - and am thinking of doing some learning of CMSes's

searching the forum there's a fair few opinions on EE, wordpress, Joomla etc.

EE looking the most flexible - at the cost of a learning curve.

but can't find out on contribute - which i have a license for... and looks pretty useful to me (as i am a dreamweaver monkey).

so any opinions on contribute?

used it about three years ago now. was great for shall we say less knowledgable clients.

and if you code your site using dreamweaver templates (cue rant) it integrates perfectly with contribute.

I wouldn't say to use it just because you have a licence though. use the right tool for the job.

you right about the right tool..

when you say less knowledgeable clients.. do you mean contribute has a more approachable client interface?

holds the more bewildered clients hand better.

Would you recommend it for clients who are literally copy-pasting from word?

what i'm thinking at the moment is to learn contribute to do low budget stuff - and farm out the more complex sites to the freelance subspecies.

i am a bit too stupid/busy to learn the complex stuff quickly.

I used Contribute about 2 years ago for a site completely built using Dreamweaver templates and it worked fine. If you're not worried about Dreamweaver filling up your code with cruft (technical term ) then I would say this is an option.

Though in saying that, I have been playing around with the new release of Drupal and fuck me its swish... it's very easy to install and use. But if you can't be sodded learning how to install a CMS, then yeah go with Contribute for now

cheers rusty.

bin thinking about this - i might offer clients a two tier quote.. 'custom - $$$' and 'software - $'

its getting my head around explaining this to clients so theys clearly understand the difference between the two.

need to think carefully on the wording as 'crap and cheap v's good and expensive' wont cut it!

It doesn't really do that. It only adds a few dreamweavery comeents around sections of the page. Hardly killing the quality of your code for the advantages you get.

have a contribute question; if i made a site with client editable content through contribute, does the client need to have contribute installed on their machine?

yup. but it's not a huge cost unless they want it on lots of computers.

Code:
<html><!-- InstanceBegin template="/Templates/intranet.dwt" codeOutsideHTMLIsLocked="false" --> <head> <!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="doctitle" --> <title>Intranet</title> <!-- InstanceEndEditable --> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;"> <link href="../../styles/tupdate_style.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css"> <link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon"> <!-- Fireworks MX Dreamweaver MX target. Created Mon Feb 23 16:07:35 GMT+1100 (AUS Eastern Daylight Time) 2004--> <!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="head" --><!-- InstanceEndEditable --> </head> <body bgcolor="#ffffff">

Yeah I'm more a fan of clean code. Plus DW inserted a bgcolor in the body tag when the DW generated CSS already covers the bgcolor, WTF?!

Me too fella, but my point was that if you require this functionality then this amount of what are only comments is acceptable in my eyes for clients who a) have little money b) can't be arsed to learn a new interface.

additions to the body tag is a gripe though.

i've worked with other CMS's that are just completely incapable of producing anything remotely near valid and that annoys me, ruining my beautiful code.
