Browser Compatibility Tools

just wondered what resources people used to produce cross-browser compatibility.

Being a new comer to web design/development this part of the process feels like a non-stop barrage of brick walls, and I am sure a few others out there would benefit greatly from this thread.

The best way is extra machines for testing, for me that involves a main PC for IE7 and Firefox 2 and a second PC with IE6, Firefox 1.5 and Opera. Same at work with the addition of an iMac for Safari and Firefox.

For HTML email add Outlook, Outlook Express and AOL Desktop. For Webmail Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail and any others that you know your client base will be using all checked in the above browsers.

This is a good site for IE bugs - Explorer Exposed!

Really, if I run into an issue, I just google it. Also, you learn with experience. Make it work in Firefox/Opera/Safari (which should be brutally easy if you know HTML/CSS) and then fix for IE.

I think it's time to stop bothering for old browser, i try to make my design work in IE6, IE7, Mozilla and opera. Sorry but i don't really care if a mac user add a bad experience on my website because he is already having a bad experience.. I am joking.

You should use a CSS reset sheet. Thats one of the main things that can help, because it starts you off from a relatively neutral playing ground on most/all browsers.

Yep, I've used that method. Really only needed for IE6, so it's easy enough to target. IE5-5.5 were the real head-bangers.

Also note this: Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 is freeware, so you can run multiple copies of Windows.

Once you are really rockin' it though, you'll find that 9 times out of 10 your code comes out working in all the major browsers.

i get that, things like nested tags to avoid ie6's box model issues will become habit

Yep was gonna say what pgo said - use Virtual PC - none of that multiple machine rubbish, just mount the image and away you go - multiple testing environments. I don't have access to a Mac, I test in Safari on Windows and I assume it'll be more or less the same if i'm honest.
