Narrative

I'm in uni doing graphic design, and would currently like all areas of the Artworld's input on their version of narrative.
What they think Narrative & Non-narrative is,
Why it is/isn't important
And wether you prefer it or not.
Any input for this brief sould be great!

Nikkie

Sounds like the sort of topic a bitter youth-hating cynical middle-aged college teacher would set.

If you get the impression the old fuck thinks narrative (whatever that refers to) is important, I'd advise you to write a paper about the importance of narrative in graphic design. And vice versa. The actuality of the facts don't matter. The Olde Fuck wants his ego massaged, and that's your job.

its more of a research brief. part of my module. i was just hoping for outsiders views. and some answers. narrative being something that tells a story.. examples of such work etc.. in graphic design does it always need to tell a story. . . i.e colours and the fonts being used etc...

i always believed you would see something and immediatley know what its about but if its in plain arial or helvetica (GODAM i hate that font!) then it wouldn't really illustrate any story!! Any answers would be greeeeaatt!!

Some would argue that you can't avoid creating a narrative with your audience nowadays:

I'd look into semiotics... sustained/manipulated/social/etc.
I'd think about what a brand offers a customer compared to a product/service.
I'd consider the impact of "captive audiences" and how they can be sustained (moving image, ad networks, multi-media campaigns).
I'd look into the success of viral advertising and especially 2-part reveal/teaser campaigns.

(Oh and let Helvetica lie, the world would be uglier and more confusing without it....)
