Can it be done with just a css layout?

Obviously if I want to retain elements of a website around the display of a word doc or pdf i can use frames, but i wondered if there was a way of clicking on a link to open a doc within a table or div element or something?

I'd hate to use frames if possible.

My inspiration came from the intranet layout used in www.silverorange.com's demo intranet, where they have a cool layout on the left of menu items, but quite separate content loaded into the middle from it.
