installing php on windows
I want to be able to run php on my Windows XP laptop without having to connect to the internet. I downloaded Apache 1.3.39 and installed it and it appears to work. I next downloaded php 5.2.5 and installed that. I created the .htaccess file and modified the config file, but when I attempt to open a php file in my browser, it only displays the code and does not run it. Any ideas on what am I missing? |

for windows i highly recommend Apache2Triad Net it runs from an installer so there's no fuss. sets up a great server for you to play about with.php, mysql databases etc. "Get out of my face!"
"NO! I'll get in your FACE!" |

Nice 2D...I like that much better than the garbage I use currently to test shizzle. I'm no PHP guru, but it's damn nice to be able to test pages locally... Also, are there any plugins for FF that allow it to render PHP pages and ignore includes and other PHP code? Sometimes FF shows the pages...sometimes, it keeps opening blank pages. fun: HGC v.4 | last.fm: DT | me | oi! f*ck u roto: ...via meebo!

I followed 2 different tutorials and tried the installation on 2 different PC's to manually install php, apache and sql - different errors each time. I just downloaded and installed XAMPP. It doesn't work at all. The instructions are haphazard. Appears to be a sloppy package. Not user error. We are in the business of evaluating software (have been for 20 years) and this installation stinks. I am now downloading Apache2Triad Net. Installed Apache2Triad. Installed perfectly and runs great. Thanks. Last edited by theshadowknows : 11-01-2008 at 13:31. |

do you have any idea how many developers use packages like xampp, wamp etc etc? they work fine. definitely USER ERROR. if you can't even install xampp i hate to see how many botched software evaluations your 20 year old business has made. |

Belittling comments to boost ones ego have no place on professional forums. The Jerry Springer show may be a more appropriate place for you. |

Get MAMP - It's free and it's excellent. MySQL, Apache, PHP in a neat installer package. living-e AG: MAMP - Mac - Apache - MySQL - PHP If you have a few spare bucks, I recommend getting MAMP PRO. Same stuff as above but with the nice GUI control panel. It's been my main dev environment for over a year and I've never had a problem. Fully Leopard compatible. |

vmware images are another option - the player is free; self contained, all set up for you, ideal if your deployment platform is 'nix of some flavour. Virtual Appliance Marketplace - Application/Web Server meh.

Now with added sarcasm.

I recently installed Apache/PHP/MySQL and initially couldn't get the PHP going. As PGO said, it can be a million things. BEst way is to Google the error and see what other people came up with to remedy the issue. Prior to this installation, I installed XAMPP on my previous PC with similar nightmares. The one common error though, was skype - something to do with the magical Port 80 on your PC ... wild guess though I made 100 posts and all I got is this stupid signature.

Bollocks to all of this PHP on Windows shite. If you are developing websites all you need is a text editor and an image manipulation program, I use Kate and the Gimp on Kubuntu Linux - all of which are free. That way you are testing on the same platform you should be hosting on. Ubuntu is popular and fairly easy to get set up, though I have a preference for Kubuntu as I find KDE is better than Gnome. Kubuntu - The KDE Desktop Download it, burn it to a CD-R, and reboot. Kubuntu will now run straight from the CD without any installation required, have a play around with it and if you like it install it. Ideally you will have another hard drive, or an old PC, to install it on. I have Windows installed on my Home PC, as I like to play games, and Linux on my Work Laptop, which is ideal as the laptop is only a 1.4Ghz with 512mb of ram. |
