I need to get multiple image slideshows onto a page, very similar to UVA.

I've tried with some Javascript from List Apart, but no joy.

They use prototype and mud_FadeGallery in that wordpress plugin:
Prototype JavaScript framework: Easy Ajax and DOM manipulation for dynamic web applications
Index of /_scripts
May have to dig a bit deeper. Try jquery and an associated slideshow script.
