Domain registration issue

Over a year ago, someone I know said that he is running web hosting service, so I asked him if I can have a site hosted by him. Gave him the money, he registered a domain and hosted it on his server.
Recently I've come across the whois info for my site: whois.net/whois_new.cgi?d=ilyatitov&tld=com
It's his name in there. So the question is: Is the domain actually registered to him, and does it belong to him? He didn't give me any documents, nor did I really care at the time of registration. Now I am starting to put work into the site and would not be pleased if it turns out that I don't own it.

I have not spoken to him yet, what should I do?

he who has the certificate will offically own it, however if you ask him to give you the certificate and trandfer domain you can put it in you name.

could be a matter for the small claim court if he's a dik about it tho

Errr... speak to him? Seriously, do you need someone to hold your hand when you cross the road?

I have a few domains belonging to a number of friends which I've registered in my name, just because it was a quicker and easier at the time, and they're never going to know the difference between a nameserver and a cheese sandwich. But if one of them asked me to hand it over, I'd do it in a flash. Before you get all Mr. Angry about it, why not actually approach the guy. He might have just been doing you a favour.

I know, it's a stupid situation.
I just sent him this:

Hi Victor.
I've ran across this today: whois.net/whois_new.cgi?d=ilyatitov&tld=com
I would like to get all the official documents and have the domain transfered to my name.
Same applies to elenapriestley.com.
Best regards,
Ilya

Thing is, i don't have a friend relation with him, and have last spoken to him several month ago, regarding extension of the registration.
Had to ask as I am unsure how he would react.

These are the very situations that demonstrate that you should always keep your domain registration and hosting separate.

Brendan, do they have a domain control panel or anything? Often you can open a domain up for transfer and transfer it to your GoDaddy account or something.

Brendan - if you want to use my nameservers (the machines that control the addresses for your webserver, email etc.) I don't mind taking on your domain if you can find your control panel. What is your domain name? This would help people to help you work out what to do.

Hey, i've got a reply.
He says he'll do what he can.
Can anyone tell me what i should expect to get from him, how does a certificate look, how will i know that the domains are in my name?

Probably sounds stupid, but I just don't know the answers.

Thanks!
