flv converter

Software request! I need software that is:
  1. Not Flash.
  2. Cheap or free - preferably free.
  3. Works on OSX (one for Windows would be nice, too!).
  4. Can convert from MOV and (possibly) other formats.

I used this on a Windows machine
Allok Video to FLV Converter - Convert AVI MPEG to FLV, FLV to SWF, Flash Video Encoder

It's decent and not that expensive. I don't think you are going to find a free one. (I couldn't, for windows. I have no idea for Mac)

Thanks, gray. Hopefully ffmpegx is easy enough to use.

Yeah, that looks decent. Downloading a trial. Thanks.

Free Superc will do it - I can't post proper urls yet - need 15 posts

detail here:
.w w w .erightsoft.com/Superdc.html

their site is an absolute joke to find the actual download link page but I think this should work -
w w w .erightsoft.com/S6Kg1.html

I downloaded Riva FLV Encoder (free) and it seems to work alright. I'll have to do some tests on the quality of the encoding.

Seems pretty much 1:1, but I did downsample the resolution about 100%.

30MB Divx AVI -> 60MB FLV (480x360, 25fps).

I'm going to do some more thorough tests with it, though. Can't be hosting 60MB movies. Of course, that test file is 20 minutes long, so 60MB ain't bad.

I'll have the eventual user of the site use ffmpegx since he's on a Mac.

Whatever works, I guess.

Flash, obviously, is optimal, but I don't use it enough to justify dropping $400 or whatever it costs these days.

I used allok to convert 20+megs avis to 6-8 Megs flvs and on an uncompressed avi (1+ GB) reducing it to 8 megs.

I just tested Allok and it converted the same file, same settings, at the same size. Granted, it only converted 5 minutes of the 20 minute file, but came out to 16MB, so if you do the math they're essentially the same.

Allok interface has some nicer features, though.

It really depends on the codec of the source file. "AVI" is basically meaningless as it's just a wrapper format for MPEGs.

pgo, I'll hand in my vote of confidence for ffmpegx. Mildy confusing, but free and does the job well.
