Screen resolutions for wallpapers?

What sizes do I leave out (or include) these days?
So far I've included: 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024.

But after those it gets kind of iffy. 1600x1200, 2560x1600, 1440x900???? There's too many. Any ideas? I'm stumped.

Those aren't resolutions. Those are sizes. There is an important difference and you should understand it if you're doing computer graphics.

I do my wallpapers 1024x768 pixels at 72 dpi resolution.

To be fair, I think the word resolution has been used like this for years -certainly enough to enter the common parlance. Even monitor manufacturers use it to describe their products. Take this for example from the Dell website:

"Current high-resolution LCDs available on Dell notebook computers can display resolutions as high as 1600 x 1200 on a 14.1- or 15-inch screen and 1920 x 1200 on a 15.4-inch screen."

Well, to be fair, you're absolutely correct that the word has been used that way for years. Wrongly.

It makes no difference what you call anything, of course. Like Humpty-Dumpty, a word means whatever you decide it means.

I should say that the confusion between size and resolution causes major fuck-ups in the printing industry and I've been a victim of it too often to feel very lenient about it!

We make corporate wallpapers for holidays and such. In these sizes...

Widescreen
1920x1200
1680x1050

Standard
1280x1024
1024x768

Most people who would be running 1600x1200 are probably using widescreen now.

you've got to have 1920x1200... at least for those big monitor type of people.

You could probably drop the 800x600 soon. Checking my site stats I get 0-.2% of traffic using 8x6.
