Hosting a client's website

This is the first time I’ve made a site for a paying client.

What would you recommend I do for hosting. I have a personal website hosted for £30/year at the moment which only uses a small percentage of the available bandwidth. Should I just put the site I’ve made for the client on this account as an add-on domain? (I don’t think it’s going to take up a huge amount of bandwidth either.)

Or should I get them a new hosting account?

Any help would be gratefully received.

Get them a new hosting account, probably. Make sure they are paying for it. Not you.

2 options.
1. They get their own hosting account.
2. You get a reseller account and sell them the hosting.

The client would probably not be happy with a subdomain off your domain name.

Sorry, I meant to write add-on domain rather than sub-domain. Now edited.

Go with the option of being a reseller. It works slick, and makes you look more established. Plus you get perks with the more people you add to your hosting company

Yeah, get a reseller account. That's what I do.

Of course, if you're not an IT guy, don't market yourself as a real web host, I'd say. It's fine to host a few sites, but if you're selling public services as a "web host" you should really be a networking/DNS/etc expert.

14 year olds (by age and mental ability) selling themselves as actual web hosts when all they have is a reseller is the reason no one trusts web hosts. Because when the shit hits the fan, some kid with a reseller account isn't going to have the expertise to know what they're doing.

i'd just get them their own hosting - tell them its a 3rd paty host, give them the account details - allow them to take some responsibility for its upkeep - re-billing etc.

if/when they experience any server downtime or changes - then you're in the clear ...

(although reselling is probably best if you expect to have loads of clients in the future - but more of an outlaw for you to start)

With reselling, though, you can charge them larger than what their chunk of space costs you!

My reseller account makes me $5/month! Huzzah!

Thanks for your replies everyone.

Not sure whether this is something I'm going to do a lot, so probably won't go for a reseller yet, not unless I really get into web design. Does seem the way to go though, and I may well be tempted in the future

Will probably just get the client their own hosting.

Nobody seems too keen on the add-on domain idea. Just wondering why that is. I understand you don't get a separate c-Panel for your add-on. Are there any other disadvantages?
(any problems with search engines for example?)

Just wondering whether anyone has had any experience of using add-on domains, and whether they had any problems with them?
