Graphic question

Howdy fellas,

Just a quick question. I'm curious as to how a certain effect is achieved.

If you have a look at the logo here (right click > view image), you'll see that its just the outline, and a small part of it is transparent. How do you get this outlined effect with photoshop, and why is it used?

Does it make positioning easier? Or maybe just to keep file size down? Either way, I'm not sure how to do it!

Cheers

I don't think it is an effect (could be wrong) I think it is just solid white text, then turned into a shape then a blue outline added to prevent this type of thing happening (GIF white borders) when applied to another background (an image on top of an image)

I thought it was probably something simple like that.

I'll give it a shot.

Thanks :-)

Yep, all semi-transparent pixels turns a nasty white on GIF's. PNG doesn't have that problem, but it suffers colour inaccuracy and transparency issues in IE.

You wouldn't need to add a stroke necessarily. The text edges are not perfect in Photoshop (or any bitmap application for that matter), so I would guess that the image was created by simply merging the logo (white) with the background layer and then removing the solid background by means of magic wand with minimal tolerance setting.

Adding a blue stroke to white text would simple result in semi-transparent blue pixels turning up white in the GIF again.
