.net

Ok, I've know it's possible to run .net on a Linux server but I can't for the life of me find any documentation on how to get it working. Does anyone have any ideas? My company has just bought a new server (windows), but the only reason we went for a windows server was .net, if we could run .net on Linux we would have definitely gone for a Linux server.
Any URLs or thoughts would be much appreciated.
Cheers guys.

first i'd heard of that. there's a project called Mono which may be of interest

The Mono Project is attempting to port the .net framework to Unix. It is ok if you want to use a handful of features from 1.0, but if you actually want to do some proper development with it you are really going to have to keep on with your windows server.

There are also a lot features that will only work with MS SQL. So you might aswell keep with what you have.

If you are looking to write software (not websites) for Unix, don't even consider looking at c#/vb.net, there is fuck all point. Do it in c, c++, java, python, etc

Yeah I've heard of the mono project which might be a good option in the future. The reason this came up was that we were looking at the microsoft Ajax page they've got and some guy from microsoft was on about how .net needs to be opened up to run on all servers(?). I know it sounds unlike microsoft, I just thought if it was true someone on here would probably know something about it.

News Story: Microsoft Not a Cathedral; Open Source Not a Bazaar

MS Ajax: AJAX : The Official Microsoft ASP.NET AJAX Site

These are two links that got me thinking. Looking back at them now the news story doesn't claim that the .NET frame work runs on a non windows server, it's just the ASP.NET Ajax tools can run on a non windows server.
Never mind.
