text question, help!!

hey guys,

kinda stuck, so i need your help!

my client came up with this design
http://www.jc-dc.net/misc/mockup.jpg
-with a specific font called Din mittelshrift and Din neuzit grotesk
and they want a large background image behind it and contents placed in the middle.

so this is what i did
sample

my question is how do i get rid of the background behind texts? i wrote texts in the photoshop and brought them as a jpg. i tried with a transparent background and saved as a gif, but text breaks up.

is there anyway i can write Din mittelshrift in my dreamweaver?

what am i supposed to do?

please help. thanks

joe

you are either going to have to:
A) use flash with a transparent bg for the whole site and have the huge photo be the html bg
B) work with the gifs
C) save as png and use a png hack for internet explorer.

i've used the png hack on a few sites and it seems to work pretty well. i'm always afraid of using hacks though because if internet explorer gets updated, who knows what the hack will end up doing.

if you just used the font in dreamweaver, anyone who doesn't have the correct fonts on their computer would get some sort of substitute, which would totally break your design.

- Flash would be the prettiest solution.
- PNG is the easiest solution.
- GIF is the ugliest solution.

Make your pick.

why not find a font that is as close to the one that your client wants and use that? It would be much easier than trying to use flash or do anything else that has already been suggested.

Arial? what were you thinking?!
There's much nicer fonts than arial i.e Gill Sans or Helvetica 55

most computers now come with helvetica preloaded, so specify that in your type settings. it's fairly close to that font and it's a decent compromise

this link may help you to make a judgement call ....

you'll just have to specify fall back font - for when your 1st or 2nd choice fonts aren't installed ...

Code Style: Windows font survey results

.... and explain the potential issues to your client.

in your css file just use your desired fonts like this :

font-family: arial, helvetica, verdana, sans-serif;

I'm not sure I understand your problem - do you want the text to be ON the background like in this example, or on a plain background?

Gotta love DIN!

Web typography's a nightmare still. There are only about 10 fonts you can use making sure most users will see them if you use plain (x)html/css.

Flash allows you to include fonts and anti-alias them well. But make sure you use Flash right (ie. with swf-object) so you don't exclude those without flash (like most search engines).
