tripod problem

i'd never used a tripod up until about a week ago when i got a jessops TP318 Mini tripod for my digital cam
the problem is, when I screw my camera onto the top, there is a small metal tube like thing stopping the camera from screwing down completely. this tube can be pushed down like a button, but as soon as you let go it pops back up.
this means the camera is a bit wobbly ontop of the tripod, therefore it's pretty useless.

until i find my camera wire i have to take pics using my phone.

is this thing removable? am i doing something wrong?

cheers

(x-posted to photography, but not sure if anybody goes in there)

let us know which tripod you do get, because I need one for my cheapo sony cybershot - and I don't want to make the same mistake.

i got a second hand one from 'clock tower cameras' in brighton.
about 53cm all extended, £14.

it's universal so i can use it on my slr too. just make sure you don't buy one with a really stiff 'tube thing' that doesnt push in easily. i bought one without a tube thing at all.
