How to set up a blog?

heya!

I'm not 100% sure where to start, but i'm looking to make a website/blog.

I'm ideally looking to create a website myself and have a nested blog on the front-page, which notifies subscribers when it is updated.

Is there any software that will help automate the blog? I'm fine to create the layout myself using XHTML & CSS, but i'm not sure how the easiest way to update it would be.

Wordpress for sure. If you are hosting with a provider that uses C-Panel software, simply install it using Fantastico and when asked which folder you would like to install it to, leave the field blank. That will install the "index" of your blog as the front page of your site (in plain english). I'm sure a handful of my fellow DT'arians will give you a thorough technical summary of what I just said.

How customiseable is wordpress. I`ve never used it, but i want to 100% design the look and feel of my new blog. I`ve never set one up before..

Will it let me control the visual elements myself, and just use its brains for the backend stuff?

So my own CSS, icons, input boxes, submit buttons where i want them etc etc?

It's completely customiseable. You can take a look at http://www.wp-themes.net and 45 Excellent Blog Designs | Design Showcase | Smashing Magazine for some inspiration!

Cheers for that. And you dont have to design the whole site in Wordpress... can you just have the blog section as the wordpress?

I had my randomcolors website running off an wordpress installation for a while.
It worked fine, but I had to edit some key pages to get it run the way I wanted. So updating it with new versions was a bit of a nightmare.

Depending on what you have in mind it might work and it's also highly customisable. If you know your way round css and html.

Yep i do... which is why i want the freedom of building my site how i want, and not having any included css telling my what design it should do...

with wordpress it's not the css that is going to be a problem, but the actual code. you have to plan your website around wordpress and it's possibilities. anyway, most problems will be documented in the codex or the forums.

My suggestion is install the blog, have a go at it, then decide if it works for you.

I really can't recommend WordPress enough, you can host it yourself or run quite a fully featured blog from their own wordpress.com domain.

I built my whole portfolio and blog site with WordPress as a CMS, it's that good.

I still think Textpattern is better and less bloated.
