How do I change avi to mov files so i can play them on my ipod?

AFAIK, you need to install AVI codec for Quicktime.
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/avidivx.html

You should be able to open most AVI files with the right codec installed which you can then re-save in .mov format from the Quicktime app.
