Hi peeps, Two questions. Question one Basically, im familiarising myself with Quark, and I was wondering if this was the correct way to be doing things. I am creating my graphics in photoshop, and then saving this file as as jpeg, and using it in Quark as the 'background'... then inserting any text I need in Quark over the top. Or should I be adding the seperate images in Quark to make up the graphics instead of just using one image as all the graphics. (hopefully someone can make sense of my ramble) Question two Can anyone tell me if its possible to add a stroke to text in Quark? I know there is a drop shadow option, but no stroke as far as I can tell. I am using Quark 7.0 Cheers decent web hosting - www.balue.com

well... i'm not familiar with quark 7, as i'm well old school. Normally you would set up your background image in photoshop or illustrator before as a whole. But i think 7 accepts transparencies so you can do it on page but not really a good habit to get in too. images should never be jpeg use tiff's or eps depending if you want those transparencies or not. in quark 4 the only way of getting a stroke is too change type to image and add an outline... but that really fucks you up if you need to change anything after you've changed it too curves. i hope this helps.. but i'm either indesign CS2 or quark 4... 7 i'v heard its pretty good but i have had no experience. |

I agree, Indesign CS2 for me (and Quark 4/6) - can't be bothered with Quark 7; what I've heard about it doesn't justify the expense. In Indesign its a simple matter of selecting the stroke in the swatches palette and choosing a colour. Effervescing Elephant

Agree with the above try it in In-Design, Quark 7 was a waste of my money it has Postscript problems with certain CTP machines, trapping errors, colour issues and they have already released two more versions to try and fix their mistakes, besides what good is Quark on it's own. Least with Creative Suite you get the lot. |

When exporting, do you provide your printer with the quark file, or is there an option to export as something else? I can only find the option to save as quark or pdf. I'm using the trial version at the moment so that may be why, but I am just wondering in advance. decent web hosting - www.balue.com

never export straight to pdf!!!... if they want a pdf export as a postscript (ps) file then use distiller to pdf the postscript! but it all depends what the printer wants... they might want the quark file, then you should collect to output and this will sort out all your links and pictures. You will have to supply the printer with your fonts this way... remember make sure your fonts can work with the printers/studios computers!! |

sometimes... and only sometimes... its doesn't embed all images and fonts (in quark! as it isn't adobe)!!! Its to do with postscript coding... i don't fully understand but thats what i was told to do by previous printers and DTP people. And i have had stuff sent through that was put together on a pc and because they did a straight export to pdf there was missing images when i opened the pdf on my mac! better safe than sorry... |

you should do it in Indesign as well.. its good form! but maybe i'm just old school... i'v had problems with previous Indesign's so i have always done it this way, don't know if the export function is now better in CS2. |
