Hi there im not sure if this is a place where i can post this but if it isnt please move it or delete. I was told that alot of uk designers come here so I hope you can help me.

I live in the uk and im in 6th form at school. Ive been told i ought to be looking at unis and courses now if you know what you want to do since we have to apply to unis next year. This is where i need help.

Im looking to take graphic design as a course at university however i dont know which unis are good can you please help me. Any advice would be great as im not sure if i can go to a ucas event at the G-mex in manchester about art and design courses from lots of different unis.

Hi,

I have just finsished medialab arts, now known as digital art and technology, at Plymouth University.
I would really reccomend taking a year off and going surfing, thats what I did, best idea I ever had! But back to the point...

Plymouth University is really good. The institue of digital art and technology (iDat), the faculty that runs the course, is getting some great stuff done and has global recognition in the field. They also do trips to digital events and are always up there in Creative Arts magazine graduate showcase, just recently getting rated 3rd best design degree in the UK, despite being a digital degree.

Plymouth's being rebuilt, and by the time you start the city will be awesome. The students union is being re-vamped, which is good news, and there are tonnes of cool activities you can get up to like surfing, sailing, wakeboarding and all sorts.

We also get emails daily for job openings from previous graduates that started their own company or that are established in the industry. Another bonus is that the course offers, a now optional, industrial placement, which really helps develop your skills and makes the graduates really employable.

Its a fun course, and if you want to do fun intersting eye popping quirky out there projects, this is a good course.

Nick

Order a backissue of Computer Arts Graduate Showcase. Best ways to find if Uni's are good is to see if they have won any awards, and if they have it will be in their prospectus.

My 3 choices were:
1st- Sunderland
2nd- Plymouth
3rd- Surrey <-- Although its a good course you arent guarantee'd placement in Halls of Residence mind.

I was looking at Graphic Design in the New Media route though.

Lau do a foundation course first it'll give you a decent enough folio to get into a good design course at a good uni. Assuming your near Manchester, Stockport College has a good course (or it was when I went there) taught by the bloke who did all the Happy Mondays stuff. Think Andy Votel teachs there as well.
