I'm curious how they've got the dog to overlap on this site (http://www.lycos.co.uk/).

Layers maybe? I've checked the picture, and the banner doesn't go right to the top....

I've no idea. I'm sure you will though.

Yeah they use layers plus the image. Its a pretty simple effect to achieve.
