Online galleries

Anyone know of any?
A client wants a site to exhibit and sell art (not his own - he's a collector). Does anyone have a favourite online art/photo gallery to help me gather ideas and styles in my head?

Craig Grannell has a pretty nice was of cataloguing and displaying photos here. Nicely avoids the pop-up dilema and could be adapted for your needs.....

I would use grey or white as the main theme... i've said it before... neutral colours are the best for exhibiting stuff - they don't interfear with the colours of the exhibited works.
guess that's not much help, eh?

There was a really good one that was posted on cre@te a while ago - it was basically done in flash with the nav in the middle on a semi-see through bit and when you clicked the photo thumbnails the photo loaded as the background - someone from cre@te remind me what the ur was pls!
I remember it was someones portfolio.

Well remembered Oli!

Thanks

Thanks very much everyone

I really like the photography on www.mariolalich.com, but I think I'll do something more like the Rui Camilo photography site (very nice).

First thoughts:
xhtml/css
needs a nice font
maybe make thumbnails act as previews
an off-white colour scheme is definitely the way to go

Hopefully this will result in a clean and subtle design which will draw the eye to the artwork.

Cheers for the help so far, keep it coming.

www.BritArt.com

It's possibly a big more 'complete' than you had in mind, but there are some nice ideas that could be incorporated into your site such as the handy reference illustration comparing the size of the painting to a six foot person.

I'm not sure if they handle the 'selling on' of art or if they only deal directly with the artists, but it's worth checking out.
Given the site title, they may also require that the artist be British.

(I plan/hope to be showing/selling some of my own paintings there when I finally get my arse in gear and read the bumph on the site.)
