methods for best looking gif's w/ transparency

hello everyone, i'm having a little trouble getting a good looking gif of some text w/ transparency. you can see my current product at http://www.restandeffect.com/almostp2p/preambleh3.gif

any recommendations? if it helps, this will be on a white background, but i have some other issues w/ some text that is a off-white and resides over green.

thanks in advance.

If the text is going to sit on a white background why does it need to have a transparency? Also, if you're using a standard sans-serif font why not just create the text in html?

24bit PNG will achieve the best effect for transparent images. This will retain all of the anti-aliasing/shading in a similar way to a layered Photoshop file. The drawbacks with this file format are that they usually outputs at a much larger file size than a 8bit/Gif image and there are display issues to address for PC screen display.

assuming yr using photoshop: make sure when saving as a transparent gif that you set the matte colour to the background colour that the gif will overlay ... so in this case, white.

The biggest problem with using PNG's is that IE 6 and below do NOT support PNG transparency. IE 7 is supposed to support it. I'd stick with the matting on a GIF.

i don't design for ie first. i hope not many ppl do. and yes it is a zen garden submission... well possibly. lol... nehow... png's are chunky files so i'll stray unless i'm embedding a png into flash then it's okay.

but yes, this is most practical for a gif. i'll try the matte background colour but there must be a better way, i've seen too many perfect gif's w/ transparency over multiple colours and this can't be the 'gist of solutions.

the reason i'm using the image is because only about 75% of users have georgia, and i'm quite picky so times will not be a sufficient substitute for me. btw: does anyone kno wut font this site uses by default?

Code:
font: 10pt "Trebuchet MS", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;;
Oli, you've got an extra semicolon. Fix it sonny.

Also, IE7 does indeed support PNG alpha transparency. Oh happy day.

I think you'll be safe using Georgia as a web font. Anytime I've used it, I've gone:

Code:
font: Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif;
As you said, Georgia will cover a large majority of people and the rest will probably have Times installed. If not, they'll get whatever their default serif is.
