Portfolio advice

hello people of designers talk.

I am about to put together my first portfolio of my web design work. I am also in the process’s of putting together an online portfolio, well I say putting together, thought about it and put some ideas to screen but nothing final yet.

Does anyone have any tips and advice? I have never done a printed portfolio before.
- What’s the best size to go with A3 A4?
- I relies that quality is better than quantity. How many examples of websites should I show?
- How much descriptive text do employees expect to see with the website example… for example, name of the company, date the site was designed, what the site do.
- I have designed a couple of logos, should I show them in my web design portfolio, would that interest prospective employers.

Has anybody got any visual examples I can see or point me in the direction of a few websites that show examples.

Many thanks.

A portfolio is a portfolio afterall .. but if you necessarily want a 100% webdesign portfolio you should keep it like that. Otherwise its a portfolio of your creative work .. print, identity, web etc..

Mount it on black quality a3 cardboards, even if the work might be a5 or whatever. Web work tend to be a pain to get right on print, but make it the actual size.

And YES, quality not quantity. No descriptive text, You will always get a good chance to explain it anyway, but that doesnt mean you cant or shouldnt write anything. Its just that I wouldnt.

I question though, wouldnt it be smarter to do a online portfolio instead, or atleast in combination, since its all web stuff anyway?

the website is my main focus. I would like to get a printed portfolio together though. I feel it would make me more confident showing my work and able to talk about it.

Roughly how many website examples would you show? I have 14 I would like to show… is that too many?

Would you show the webpage as a 800x600 example or the whole length of the page.... or just the important parts of the web pages? For example: say I was showing a website called ABC and I was going to show five example pages of ABC. Some would be longer than others, would you personal go for showing as much of the page as possible or trim them up…. ?
I just want your personal thoughts, its all very helpful for me.

thanks

I wouldnt show too many, just a couple of the best, what shows your skillset the best. 14 of the same wouldnt make any sense right? That doesnt mean you can't have more, or them all, on your online portfolio since it gives the viewer a whole lot of choices and chances to navigate as he please. But in long run I would say you should show what you think is best to show, and as completement add a clientlist - if that is what you want.

If a webpage is bigger than 800x600 and you think its a good idea to show the rest of it, you should. It makes sense, since its a part of the work too. But thats all up to you and your work.

As Mr Fred said, use your mind, theres no exact rules!
