Print Brief

I need to write a print brief to send off to a few prospective printers - what do i need to include/ how should i lay it out?

Could someone explain pp (printer's pages) for me? I spose i should brief the printer using pp. I've got 82 sides of A4 (in 4-side booklets), without front and back covers. How does that translate?

haha, ive probly got it wrong. I thought that printers have some sort of page measurement called pp? As in, a book could have 80pp. Maybe i've got the wrong end of a stick somewhere. In my mock-up booklet, i have 82 sides not including front and back covers. I assume that the printer doesn't want me to tell them that there's 82 sides to print, how do i express the number of pages to them? I always see it written as say, 120pp.

Doubt i've made myself any clearer.

Its not a page measurement.

are they printing the cover?
if so it 84pp - - just specify different finish for cover.

You want to specify like this:

Title: A5 Leaflets x 2 sorts
Size/spec: A5, 4pp x 2 sorts
2,000 x 2 sorts
Origination: PDF Supplied
Proof: Proofs required for approval
Printing: Four colour process + seal throughout
Materials: 150gsm Silk
Finishing: Trim to size, fold, pack suitably by type and deliver

Sound mik, so as it's for my yearbook which is size A4, itd be

Title: A4 Yearbooks x 2 sorts - what's 2 sorts? 1 sort for the pages, 1 for the cover, or what?
Then the 4pp is the covers yeah? And the 2000 is the rest of it? Sorry to be a spesh

Is a pp one whole page, both sides? And where would i put the pp count in that specification, or am i missing it?

that was an example.
2 sorts means 2 seperate jobs.

yours would be:

Title: A4 Booklet x 1
Size/spec: A4, 84pp x1 (include cover unless they arent printing them)
Quantity: However many you are printing
Origination: PDF Supplied
Proof: Proofs required for approval
Printing: Four colour process + seal throughout
Materials: Your choice
Finishing: Trim to size, fold, pack suitably by type and deliver

As a rule, if the cover is going to be printed on exactly the same stock & colours as the inner pages then its called a 'self cover' - this means an 84 page booklet would be referred to as an '84pp booklet with self cover'.

If the cover is printed on a different stock (or even different colours, say the inner is black and white and the cover is colour) you would say '80pp booklet with 4pp cover'.

'pp' refers to the number of pages when the sheet is folded; a 4pp A4 would be an A3 sheet folded once, giving you two pages on one side and two pages on the other side. An 8pp A4 would be two A3 sheets folded, giving you 8 pages.

Because its based on the folding of a sheet the number of pages always increases by 4, however, when its a flyer you could have something like a 6pp 1/3rd A4 roll-fold which is basically an A4 sheet folded twice in-on itself making the finished size 99mm x 210mm. It all depends on how many folds you make in the sheet.

Hope that's helps you out!
