Looking for some artwork advice...

I am a Graphic Artist. I am in the process of setting up an on-line gallery to sell some of my artwork on canvas. Aswell as offering my own designs I want to offer other images.

Now, I have been looking into some of the stock photography sites, however, in the terms and conditions they explain that images can only be used if contributing to less than 50% of the final product (or similar wording). Therefore, buying the image and re-selling this as a canvas print is out of the question i presume!

As an example I have already had an inquiry regarding a large 'ratpack' type canvas with Sinatra and the likes on it, but not sure where to source this type of image for this purpose. Can anyone advise as to where I can source images that can be used for this purpose? There are loads of old photos on art.com that I would like to use, even as reference pics to create my own artwork, but this is also an area I am unsure of with regards to copyright. For instance I have seen many sites offering a particular Jimi Hendrix image as artwork, so not sure who owns copyright etc.

I was sure it was on this site I seen a link of an organisation to contact for advice on such matters but a general search on 'copyright' doesn't bring it up. Any advice is greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance to those who help...

easy peasy

There’s a very simple solution.... which is your a 'graphic artist' therefore if u reproduce the 'ratpack' artwork in your own styling, using illustrator or whatever to render the image with slight alternations [use your imagination for this....] the image is then classified as your own, thus copyright belongs to you and all royalties to it.

Enjoy this exploit of playgarism sir it has served the nation very well.
