Insufficient memory ?!

I'm using illustrator, I'm trying no place/import a jpg (not that large, 3.4MB) and illustrator refuses to do it. It complains; "Insufficient memory was available to complete the operation." WTF?!

I've tried closing all other programs down, restarting, everything I can think of. What's going on??

why dont you save a version at 72 or even save for web... you cant possibly need it to be that big? Once youve done the illustration you can scale it back up again if need be

I dont have illustrator on this machine I'm working on and I cant get hold of any mates to tell me about changing the preferences

Thanks finbarr, I halfed the scale, and scaled it back up again. Once it was smaller it imported ok. Thanks for the help. Don't know how I managed to make an a4 image 3.8 MB tho.

cheers

You should see the stuff we're getting in to work. One of my colleagues got an 85MB image. Via email. Nearly brought down the server.
