allright, I have several mp3 files and avi files on my site, but i can link to them and hope that end users right click and download when they want to enjoy it more than once, but then i have certain users that hit my site up 5 times a day to listen to the same song. Can i force download without putting these files in to a .zip or .rar folder?

well I'm assuming that if a person visits your site 5 times a day to listen to the same mp3, that they are actually accessing the file in their local cache... so that shouldn't be a problem for you...

You can try this to force a download. Haven't tried it myself, but planet-source-code usually has some pretty reliable stuff... if this doesn't work, just do a search on their site to see other alternatives...

If you decide to use a compressed file to force download, it's best to use ZIP. Not everyone has software to decompress a RAR.

And, as always, make sure it's legal to distribute these files.

its music files that i partook in when playing in a symphonic band. nothing special but the 140 band members are hitting me up non stop and not dling. I will force download with that source code. thanks for the help.
