As far as I know you need hardware to do it and it isn't cheap... Formac do a analogue to digital converter... Andrew Parker

Although it's not free, one route would be a VHS/DVD combo player to get your VHS onto DVD. Then rip, and there are many inexpensive programs for converting DVD to mpeg (here's one). Search for "dvd ripping" at download.com for others...most are free to try. I'm sure you could find a crack to keep costs down... fun: HGC v.4 | last.fm: DT | me | oi! f*ck u roto: ...via meebo!

Just look around here. Or have a browse around that site - it's full of useful information. Mostly PC-only. You won't be able to copy VHS to your hard drive without some form of video capture card. You'll find a large selection at Newegg (again, PC-only) - since you're in the UK, I don't think they'll ship to you, but you can at least do research on the site and see if you can find the same products at a UK retailer. |

I'm going to be needing to do the same thing as Weldo (soon...after hopefully getting the VHS/DVD combo player for X-mas). I know, in theory what I wrote will work, so cheers for the free DVD ripping software suggestions. Also, is DVD ripping the coolest term for copying a DVD onto one's hard drive? Or, is there something else it's called to be unlike the whole mp3 crowd? fun: HGC v.4 | last.fm: DT | me | oi! f*ck u roto: ...via meebo!

in the past i've plugged my dv cam into a vcr, recorded onto dv tape and then imported to pc from there. pain in the arse to be honest though. i noticed a sign outside snappysnaps recently that said they did it there. next time, that's what i'll do. |

Cost @ snappysnaps? Thinking, over time, VHS/DVD combo player, then DVD rip with free software may be the best route. fun: HGC v.4 | last.fm: DT | me | oi! f*ck u roto: ...via meebo!

Anyway, back to the subject... I got rid of my VCR about 2 years ago and went all-DVD, but I ran across a stack of old high-school sporting events, stupid movies my friends and I used to make (amateur directors and all), etc. I realized I no longer had a way to watch them. I found a local place, like you did, that conversions from VHS to DVD and it was RIDICULOUSLY pricy. The DVD-VCR combo and then ripping is the best route I've found without having to add hardware to my machine. Now, if I can only get that DVD-VCR combo gizmo for x-mas. fun: HGC v.4 | last.fm: DT | me | oi! f*ck u roto: ...via meebo!

Doing The Same Stuff!!
ive been turning old vhs tapes to dvd for a while now. i was using a thing called a Dazzle Bridge which i linked my VHS up to and connected it to my computer through the firewire connection. The only problem was that it was very time consuming. So as an alternative i transferred all these tapes to dvd through a dvd/video combo as mentioned above. then decrypted the dvd onto my hard drive using dvd decrypter and other such software. Then I striped the VOD files apart using a piece of software called YASA DVD to MPEG and it reduces the file size and time involved by a hell of a lot. if you need any help drop me a line and ill try and help Michael |

I use a Dazzle Hollywood Bridge box which captures the output from the VHS recorder (or DVD player) and puts it in a format that iMovie recognises - then I rip it to DVD. Incase you guys aren't aware of this little cracker, here's what I'm using for recording direct from TV which negates the need for DVD as you just copy the file from the player onto your computer (Mac and PC) and then rip. My VHS recorder has been consigned to the bin... http://www.topfield.co.uk/terrestrialequipment.htm Got it from http://www.turbosat.com/acatalog/Topfield.html |
