And don't forget their budget. Big money clients get charged more.

We call that "graceful degredation".

Sorry, I've been reading Jeremy Keith's DOM book.

I like to work to a day rate.
If you are happy to earn £200 a day, (£200 x 200 working days = £40K a year)
then charge £100 if you think will take half day etc.

I sometimes charge a lot more, sometimes less. Depends on what the client can afford, whether I think I will enjoy it, etc.

You could always just charge what you think it is worth.

i.e What your landlord/mortgage company think it is worth charging you each month.

Like most people here I charge per hour and quote how long it will take. I also have a guideline of how long projects usually take... ie. 3 - 5 hrs logo design. etc.

What hourly rate do you guys charge per hour?

I work out what I need to charge hourly/daily depending on the project (bit of javascript doesn't take a day) add 20% for all the quote writing emails & phone calls. Then double it and present it to the client who says *fuck me how much* we then negotiate and I end up with a figure I can live with and still remain profitable if the project drags on longer than expected.

I always quote on a project basis, they don't get a breakdown of hours unless they ask (and they never have). Though often a project quote will involve a core site price with optional extras - you want that super search you pay me more, you want cms that'll cost you this much etc etc. Gives you both some room for manouvering and helps them feel a bit more in control, plus when they inevitably ask for it later you can just point to your quote and say sure it'll cost you... and there's less debate. It doesn't have to be the same things but the fact that your costing out parts should give them an idea of what to expect and that you haven't just plucked some number out of the air once you've already won the contract.

It's an art in itself and that's why we love project managers (good ones anyway )

I would have thought you could get away with charging more, don't know what the market is like in America but £30 ($50) an hour isn't unusual over here for someone with your sort of knowledge base (of course, your design could be shit)

No, since I'm just starting out in a very, very limited market (small town, small businesses, low budgets, etc.) I felt that $30, while a bit low is an amount I can live with for now. $50-100+ is more standard around the country I believe.

As soon as work starts coming in, I'll be able to charge more.
