printing stuff

I'm doing our school's leaver's yearbook this year, and we're having it properly printed and bound.

When it comes to printing though, i don't understand the colours, and i suppose i'll need
to to be able to speak with a printer's about costs.

I understand that if i had a page of colour photographs, then that would be a full-colour page, but i don't understand what is meant by 1-colour, 2-colour etc. Could someone explain, i don't want to sound a fool when im trying to get a quote.

Also, how do i term it when i want a page with a few bits of colour, i.e A few colour photographs, or some coloured text?

Cheeers.

All you need to say is your having a four colour book unless you are using pantone spots.

printing machines have chambers for the inks, if you are using four colour (cyan magenta yellow and black(or key)) then those colours go into four seperate chambers, this is a four colour job. However there are premixed colours that can go into the chambers - like pantone colours. So you could fill two chambers with two pantones or a pantone and a cyan and so on, this is a two colour job.
Simple as that, if you have photos you will need to use four colour CMYK.

You may want to consider digital printing for that, in which case doesn't matter what you use it'll be 4 colour (although I heard a rumour that some digital print machines will now load pantone colour cartridges).

The printers we use won't be local to you and your best bet is to go to a local printers, sit down with one of them explain what you need and get as much free advice as you can.

90 Pages? Cant be done. The number of pages have to be divisable by 4, so you could go for 88 pages or 92 pages.

Be carefull using 100gsm for pages as there is a risk of 'showthrough' Consider 130gsm Silk. Dont go for gloss stock on the pages, reflections make it hard to read!

Also, I have found that anything above 76 pages is not good if you want the job 'Saddle stiched' (stapled) Pay extra and have it perfect bound (spine). You will have to create and supply the artwork for the spine. The width of the spine is determined by the amount of pages and thickness of stock. Your printer will tell you what the width of the spine artwork should be.

You spec for the printer will look something like this:

Job Title: XXXXXXXXX
Pages: 88pp + 4pp Self Cover (92pp in total)
Stock: Pages 130gsm Silk Cover 250gsm
Colour: 4 Colour throughout
Quantity: 200 off
Printing: Digital
Finishing: Perfect bound.
Delivery Date
