You know if you're really just starting it might be an idea to start with a table based layout and progress to CSS. Tables visually break up content, whereas with CSS you have to able to visualise the layout and control it with code which I found daunting initially. CSS and XHTML is the only way to do things, but not the only way to learn. I started with tables, then introduced CSS to control the links and backgrounds which helped get a feel for it. So for example say you have a table with a banner TD, instead of just dropping in an image, use CSS to give it's dimensions and background-image properties. Similarly, instead of having 4 images for your menu, have a UL with four LIs. That was the first really exciting introduction I had to the power of using CSS to seperate content from looks, and definitely spurred me on to using CSS completely. http://css.maxdesign.com.au/listamatic/ is a great site for tips on menus. I learned from Zeldman's book and much trial and error. Smooth out too! Camomile tea or humming Christmas carols does it for me |

lol, I will be sure to work on it. For the time being I am going to do a whole site in tables right now and then work my way to CSS because it truely is daunting at this stage and I would like to release a site over the next week. I have to redo my whole layout and make it a different width because right now its just 1024x768 and that to my understanding would be bad in most browsers that are under that resolution. |

Hmmm! Joined the forum today and learned the slice and dice thing available in Photoshop. I too was wondering what these photoshop files with website designed in it do. I also agree that tables are bad bad, as far as content organization is concerned. I have started avoiding frames and tables. At last thankx pals. I would also request the fellas here to be more careful of their tongues. I saw some bad words here. |
