hosting company supporting forums
I need some advise, I've been asked by a new start-up company to produce a website from them, which is fine but they want to include a forum at some point in the future. Unfortunately I have no idea about forums (apart from writing in the odd one or two!)... as I'm mainly a designer with some HTML knowledge... do I need a hosting company that support a certain language? php or something (see not a clue!) and then of course I will need to provide a forum at some point is there a site that provides this facility without me knowing too much! thanks |

yes you will. you'll need a server supporting asp, php (or possibly coldfusion), or even jsp. there's hundreds of free forum applications you can use.. this one uses phpbb (i think) but there's loads more. just type in open source forum software (or similar) into google. |

No, this one is VBulletin - which costs money. phpBB is free and easy to use and quite powerful (has lots of features). The only drawback is that the default template code is awful and bulky. I'm currently working on a basic style for it that's XHTML, standards compliant. punBB is good, too. Built with standards - XHTML/CSS. It's a bit new, so it's got some issues. Free as well. There's a lot of buzz around Vanilla, but I don't care for the default appearance. I prefer punBB and phpBB, myself. Each of these requires PHP and MySQL installed on the server. They come with installation instructions. |
