Dated Site - Please help!!

Any thoughts on how to make this design a little more contemporary looking:

http://dynamicpage.com/CLIENT_SITES/...front-v1-4.jpg
http://dynamicpage.com/CLIENT_SITES/...od-back-v2.jpg

I know the stock photography is dated...ughh!!And we have to mix it w/ their photos..

Also, what about that color combo?

Are requirements are Maroon and "earth tones". Not sure why I don't like either one of those color combos...

Any advise would be GREATLY appreciated!!

I'm changing it!! But now I'm stuck on the stupid colors...how can I pick a better color combination?? It's got to be Maroon as the primary color, and "earth" tones. But there's a million earth tones!!

Put a solid photo in the back, the bg gradient photo does not look good.
Don't overlap pictures like that, go for something more refined - just look at home ads in magazines.
Ditch the thick border, add some more color around it maybe? Make a thin border around the whole thing (1px).

Color scheme is good, as long as you ditch the silly light grey gradient. Try to get a better photo, one that is more high impact. Try istockphoto.com (1 or 2$ a photo). On second thought get rid of those overlaping images all together, and put them below or above...

If those two headings are two different links, you have to figure a way to distinguish that they are links. Right now they don't look like two different options. Don't space the text below the red headers so far apart, they look like badly spaced teeth.

Change the document background color to a repeating gradient.

Additional options include paying me $50 per hour to do it for you. :P

Hope that helps.

Hey thanks for tips!! Istockphoto is great! I love their prices!!

Ok, here is BEFORE:
http://www.dynamicpage.com/CLIENT_SI.../homepage1.htm
(suckss real bad)

I agree with all advice you gave me. It's too many overlapping photos, the 2 entrance points do not seem clearly defined.

Ok, here are some REALLY ROUGH concept with istockphoto that I think looks good:

http://www.dynamicpage.com/CLIENT_SI.../homepage2.htm
http://www.dynamicpage.com/CLIENT_SI.../homepage3.htm

I know..I know.. sizing is bad, color not good. But as far as layout, which do you prefer? Which has the best composition for a 2-company homepage?

Let me know which one you like the best, and I will refine my design. Also, Client really wants Maroon and "earth tone" color scheme, so I will probably have to loose the black. Let me know if you think that will work.

THANKS for your help!!

I guess you could also look at using a more contemporary type, say something sans serif perhaps?
