re-installing my mac

so im getting my hard drive replaced for my macbook and i was wondering if there was a proper way to install the OS? Ive never really installed an OS on a computer. Is there good and bad ways to install it, like the ways to partition it or not...im not so much familiar with this all.

so any advice is helpful thanks

who is replacing the hard drive?

before you replace it, make an image of the operating system on your new drive with Carbon Copy Cloner

good tutorial here (although I just used google and so should you): Macworld | Mobile Mac | Upgrading the MacBook Pro's hard drive

Famous last words. If it were easy, it would be general knowledge by now.

ive read and watched videos...you just unscrew some screws..take the HD out, put the new one in...and attach.

the only thing im not so sure is installing the OS

Just put the OS X disc in, power off the computer, power it on again while holding the 'c' key down. This will cause the computer to boot-up from the installation disc rather than the hard-drive (which will be blank anyway). Once it boots up from the disc, you'll see installation options.

the link I provided should set you straight if you want to keep all your OS settings and data etc.

if not, do the DVD way. Which is written in the manual. maybe read it one day

did this last week. you need one of those Torx (star head) screwdrivers to move over the HD tray.

other than that. 5 minutes easy. i now have 350 mega-gigger-roonies.

much better than replacing the HD in the ibook - which took me about a week and made my fingers bleed.

And much better than the first imac. which required you to ping off the processor with a screwdriver to ad more ram.

another question before i do this...

i want to partition my hard drive but don't know how many and what. I hear some people do 3 (OS, Programs, Files) other do 2 (OS, Everything else) and i know what varies but whats the best way for a developer?

i was thinking maybe 4 (OS, Programs, Documents, Web Stuff). Whats your opinion?

not sure with paralells. bought it but never used it, what a sad waste.

when i can be bothered to re-install it (my old HD died) i use booty camps with XP on a 30gig-ish partition.

i really like how you can easily switch between the OS instead of the way bootcamp does it. I havent used bootcamp, but my friend had it on his and he showed me kind of how to use it, and it such a more drag to switch. anyways, parallels is pretty sweet. dont use it much just for other work purposes
