I've been working on a maxed out black Macbook for the last year and for any serious design work (in particular web dev stuff where you have photoshop/illustrator/dreamweaver/etc. open at the same time), it just doesn't cut it. It's a great little laptop, but it's not a high-end production machine. Keep in mind as well that the color on the Macbook screens is EXTREMELY inaccurate.

I'm lucky to have a cinema display at home that I can use, but if I'm away from home and need to do any design I always have to check the color on another display before I send it off. Mac Pro is on the table to be purchased soon, need the poweerrrrrr.

The only reason I could see buying a PC over a Mac for the design/Web development is if your not willing to change the program you use to develop with and it only runs on a MS based OS. Well there is another, macs do costs more but you get what you pay for.

My macbook is fine for my needs. I regularly have Photoshop, Dreamweaver and Flash open at the same time. It does get slow at times, but that's why I'm getting me 4GB of ram to stick in it.

Why would you need an external screen?

It's what you are used to. Folks get so caught up on the subjective notion that they need the latest greatest. For most work, that ain't necessarily so.

I still use a G5 tower in work. it's ageing summit rotten but not felt the urge to update it quite yet. While not blisteringly fast, CS3 runs fine with 5gig of ram to give it some thinking space. The only time I really clock-watch is starting the bastard up in the morning, all those apps take a while to load. I like to get value for money from my macs!

I begrudgingly note our junior designers imac is faster than my old timer.. perhaps time for some sly swaps!

Apples consumer range is a very good prospect at the moment. I use a macbook with a lowly 2gig ram at home. It is a very good machine for the price.

if you got the cash it is worth going pro for the extra speed, build quality and longevity (my very much thrashed 6 year old powerbook is still running fine, use it for email and itunes. VERY much doubt my macbook will last more than a few years).

an external screen is a must have for well used lappy. you end up with all kinds of posture problems if you don't.... and laptop screens are shit.

Haha same as me. Did you update that bad boy to Leopard? I updated mine. Think it might be slower now though.

Still have the original battery. Lasts > 10 minutes unplugged on "Converse Battery Power" settings.

nah... tiger is all it will get.

new battery now, the old one completely died - would only run for about 20 seconds before sending the lappy into sleep from which it would not wake... even when plugged back in.

I'm young, I'll live, for now

4GB ram is more needed.

So with an external screen, you just use the keyboard and mouse on the macbook? I would guess so.

I have a 12" powerbook G4 only 28 months old. The battery has started getting flaky on me.

I also use a G5 tower at work! No complaints really. Apart from running C4D slowly and not doing the intel things.

I have a powerbook G4, its cool. I love it but the battery thing again. They sent out new ones coz some got busted somewhere around the world. They said faulty batteries were produced at the time and sent new ones.

Welcome to the Retro Zone.

Today I am tediously installing two 1.8mz G4 towers for students to use.

Called one John and the other Mark - equipment this old needs a name.

Hoping to get some G5's donated soon.

The old soldiers seem to load up CS2 apps OK in isolation. wouldn't fancy working on them myself!

Tempted to put my G5 tower on leopard while I am here knocking about... a bit scared of the big cat fooking up my mac!
