i had a macbook, gf had a macbookpro. same specs - 2.2 c2d, 4gb ram. i traded her and apart from the screen i didnt notice any difference.

everyday at work i have running simultaneously:
- ps or dw
- eclipse
- windows server 2003 virtual machine
- ibm portal server on the win vm (2gb minimum requirement)
- web browser(s) - usually flock

and they run like a dream. i'm really impressed with the power.

bottom line, macbook would be fine unless you need the higher res screen - but it will still be cheaper if you buy a nice 20" lcd + macbook.

As i write this post on one. The macbook's speed aint a issue. The only issue for me is the screen size. If you plan to do real work on it, you may want to look at an second screen besides it, or an macbook pro 17inch.
My main workstation uses an bigger screen which (not apple) is more pleasant to work. If you really need that portability look at the Macbook pro, if you need real workpower maybe an imac is more your go?

Think I'll go for a normal Mac Book with a big monitor.

I used a Macbook with CS3 for a bit, but found it slowed to a crawl if I was doing much. I finally upgraded to a MBP and I now run a 28" monitor and never get a slow down with photoshop/indesign/illustrator open and running Lightroom (I'm a photographer).

Its not a bad piece of kit though.

I have the same experience with a MacBook. Slowwwww. Make sure you deck it out with lots of RAM. I've learned that Macs are absolute RAM hogs. I'd go for 2GB minimum.

Tiny triangles show open apps on 2GB of RAM.

I have repeatedly told you, you need to do something about that, Patrick.
Generally a slow mac means you need to repair permissions, and clear some caches (fonts, apps, etc).

Oh well...
