Dual or Quad core - Overclocked PC hardware

I'm unsure if I'm better off getting an Intel Core 2 Duo or Quad. I think it's going to be between one of these two bundles.

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Retail / Foxconn Mars Intel P35 / 2GB OCZ PC-8500 Dual Channel DDR2 Kit - Bundle

** Overclocked Bundle ** Abit IP35 Pro Motherboard / Intel Q6600 Quad Core @ 3.3Ghz / 2GB (2x1GB) OCZ PC-8500 RAM / Tuniq Tower CPU Cooler

I play games as well as my work (flash, PS, video work).

What you reckon as I've heard nothing much takes advantage of quad core yet?

That second one only overclocks (without issues post-boot) at 3.1ghz, but it's still going to feel "nippier" in general OS use than the C2D.

Photoshop would take advantage of 4 cores and video encoding would be much quicker, but apart from that you may find the C2D is on a par/faster in other areas (plus it will run cooler/quieter).

Personally I'd buy a Mac and a console for gaming... good times.

They state on that site that the quad can be clocked to 3.3ghz?

hilst having lots of OC experiance i chose this product due to ease. This product makes overclocking to 3.3 GHZ a breeze.

You dont need to slowly increase the speed until you get a crash and then increase the voltages, they give you all the settings.
Mine is running at 3.3 at 17c idel !
Havn't had any problems, runs 24/7 np.
For the price nothing comes close to this, buy your own super computer now for £400
There are a couple of downers:
1. They sell you thermal paste for £5odd but you get some any way in the Tuniq kit.
2. Slight misstakes in the oc manuel guide, they say to go to a cpu voltage that doesn't exist (no biggy just pick the one closest) and they point to the "red" line in the picture to the left but its a black and white guide.

I won't be buying a Mac and I've got a few games consoles already.

My bad, they're using SLACR stepping chips... 3.3ghz should be fine as far as I know then? (SL9UM had issues post-boot above 3.1ghz)

Overclocking the G0 SLACR Q6600 to 4GHz :: TweakTown

It sounds like it'll clock just fine. In light of that, you think the quad's a better buy?

If your software can use four cores go for it. CS3 can use only up to two as Ive heard.

Updates are on the way apparently? Dunno Buzz... Quad core would future proof you a bit more perhaps? Right now, the C2D offers similar performance and is quieter/cooler? Multitasking's gonna be easier on the quad though.

I guess go quad core?!?!

Link please?

Ive heard from my friend who does this mumbo jumbo programming stuff that coding for more cores then one is bloody hard and you have to basically learn programing again and rewrite the application completely. Could be bollocks tho, Ive only gotten as far as that "#include brabra.c" stuff.

Software in general is bound to start using multi cores in future surely? You don't really get single core cpu's anymore.

I think I'm going to go with the quad anyways

Well Im running E6750, 4 Gigs of DDR2 and a 7900gtx and using ID, Illy and PS all at the same time under heavvy load and I cant complain. Surely go for quad if you can use all the cores in your video work, Ive heard from a video-type friend of mine that his quad is really good for encoding.

Adobe's Scott Byer had blogged about it before... "it's not a question of if, but when", yes the code will have to be re-written, yes this will take some time.

Some useful info here, under December 20th:
