30" ACD vs 24" Imac
Got a MBP for travel but am now getting back into work so I need to work on something bigger. I'm not sure what would be the best setup. A or B?: Option A: Get a 30" display and run it off the MBP. Option B: Sell the MBP and buy a 24" Imac. Obviously B is much cheaper, but A would be pretty cool and I like the idea of being mobile. Any recommendations? |

I think it would be best to be able to be move the computer easily and just get the monitor. If you are worried about spending the extra money on the 30" you could get a 24" monitor and hook it up to the macbook. I have a 24" dell. It has a lot of space. A 30" would have been nicer, but its not necessary. |

A. I have had no connection for three days last week, and it's been a nightmare. Had i had an MBP, I could've abused my in-laws' connection living in a city near Bucharest or some wi-fi cafes around here, but so... I watched a lot of National Geographic. So I am going to keep my current iMac (which I am not changing as the new ones are butt ugly) and get a MBP soon hopefully. |

I use a 23" ACD at home and when I occasionally venture into my office, I use a 30". Honestly, I prefer the 23. The 30 incher is just too much real estate to cover, and with Mac OS having the menu at the top and the dock at the bottom (yeah I know I could change it) you have to make pretty serious arm movements to get the mouse to travel that kind of distance. If you move the mouse speed up to a higher speed, it goes too fast for comfort. It might just be my imagination, but I feel I'm often moving, resetting the mouse to a central position and moving again on the big screen (i.e. it takes 2 movements to cross the entire screen), whereas on the 23, I can go anywhere in a single sweep. The 23" will run native at 1920x1200 and there's nothing out there at the moment (HD Video, the latest games, web pages) that ever really needs more than that. |

I love my 30". It takes a bit of getting used to at first but I never suffer from any of the 'serious arm movement' problems Hunch has I suppose it depends what sort of work your doing on it but it's perfect for me. |

30" with a tablet is fine in terms of arm movement, but I still prefer to work at a 23-24" (1920 x 1200) any day.. makes work less intimidating and more immediate if that makes sense? Of course for movies/presentations/etc, a 30" is just the job. |

Cheers for the advice guys. Seems silly spending so much more for the 30", but i always hate shopping conservatively only to wish i could pay a little more for the bigger or better model down the track. I might have a bit of a play with both in the mac store and see how they feel. For the price of a 30", it seems crazy not to just buy a 24" imac. Personally, I don't mind the look of the new models. |
