I got a non-apple wireless adapter for my aged g4 lappy - but as you are looking at airport extreme.. i think my laptop is older than yours. mines is a sexy old 667mz titanium powerbook (crawling along with 10.4)

An adapter would be my forst choice. What adapter did you get?

I heard that you get all sorts of hassle with them.

had no bother with mine (but that's no guarantee it will work with yous mac)

will look out the make when i get home.

only problem i have with mine is it sticks out of the card slot so looks a bit ugly. The apple ones fit inside the machine all nice... though the only apple airport card that works in my machine (pre 'extreme') is way slower 'b' wifi and double the price of what i got!

Also an option for older, PCI G4s is grabbing a Belkin 54mbps PCI card.
The chipset varies between version numbers, but those using the Broadcom chipset* are plug and play, appearing as native Airport cards, with full Airport support.
(* You'll see Broadcom credited in the trademark blurb on the box, if the Broadcom chipset is used. Apple's own wifi cards use Broadcom chipsets, hence the Belkin ones appearing as Airport.)

Belkin : Wireless G+ Desktop Card
